This week, as our most fundamental liberties are assaulted by the radical left, I thought I'd pass along a reply I posted to someone who though New York's insane new gun laws were a good thing.
"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence." -- George Washington
As a Jewish child I watched in horror, ashamed, when I saw the video of the millions being marched to the ovens by a relatively small handful of guards with guns. I thought to myself, why don't they fight back - they're going to die anyway? At least take some of those bastards with them & who knows what might have happened. It was because they were banned from owning guns & of their right to be free people & defend themselves - it turned them into sheep who were led to the slaughter.
Contrarily, my great grandmother ran a boarding house in a village outside Jerusalem from around 1910-1950. Over the years, many Arab & British soldiers got drunk & passed out at her bar & somehow when they awoke their rifles were missing. Under the British Mandate, Jews carrying firearms was a hanging offense. When the war for independence came in 1948, their village was attacked by a neighboring Arab village. The men had few weapons until Grandma came down from her attic with scores of rifles which were used to successfully defend the village.
Which would story would you rather tell? I know where I stand.
Passing laws that take guns away from law-abiding citizens or restricts their rights thereto, not only endangers them from criminals, (who will by definition ignore them), it takes away the most basic human right - the right to defend yourself & your family from evil - including evil that comes in a uniform.
The Declaration of Independence talks about the unalienable right to "Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness." The 2nd amendment goes towards the Life part. If you read the diaries of the founding fathers or the minutes from the Constitutional Convention as I have, you'd know that they weren't talking about the right to hunt or even protect one's family from Indians - it was about protection from Governmental Tyranny.
A rag-tag group of men with flintlocks had just defeated the most powerful army in the world & they were going to make damn sure they'd have the ability to rise up again should it become necessary. That's what a well regulated militia meant, (and that referred to being well skilled & practiced, not regulations), well-armed citizens who had not just the right, but the obligation, to defend themselves & their country from evil.
That is what is at stake here. Nothing Less. Never Again!
Here's a great video of the 2nd amendment rally we held in Huntington last weekend
