This week I had my most effective conversation with a Liberal on this whole Gun controversy. I was speaking to someone who, as my late father used to say, "has been voting for Roosevelt since the 40's", when he asked "why anyone needs an "assault rifle" to go deer hunting."

By way of background, this gentleman has a very successful son, (Steve) a wonderful guy & true pillar of the community, who lives in a beautiful, secluded house in an exclusive neighborhood, with a beautiful wife (Lisa) & 3 great kids, including a lovely teenage daughter named Christy.

At first I started talking about the founders & the reasons for the 2nd amendment & I saw his eyes glaze over, so I stopped & asked him 2 simple questions:

From prohibition, to the war on drugs, to prostitution, gambling, etc., has a government ban such as they are talking about EVER stopped determined criminals from obtaining anything?

Of course, his answer was No. Then I asked:

So if, God-forbid, armed criminals broke into Steve's house, intent on raping & murdering Lisa & Christy, you're position is that your son shouldn't be trusted with whatever weaponry might be necessary to save the lives of his family? You've admitted the laws being contemplated won't stop the evil-doers so you're telling me that the answer to stop gun violence is to take away the only chance decent, law-abiding citizens like Steve have of fending them off?

His answer was one I never expected to hear: "well, I never thought of it like that."
